I attend day one protest as well as day 2. Day 2, the tone was very different on 72nd and Dodge. I spent the day there. There were 2 arrests of individuals who walked in the road, and 1 bottle of water thrown at police, to which the protesters found [the person who there it] and broke down why they cannot do that. Protestors were on side walks, not blocking traffic. No weapons, nothing. Police lined the sidewalks in the road about 4 feet away and shut down traffic on their OWN. They maintained this until 8pm.
At 7:50, my live stream went out and I lost all cell phone service, as this happened a bus of Police was dropped in the middle of the intersection. Police moved to the front of Target (behind the protestors) on horses. The police behind them started open fire on the crowd, and the police lining the side walk drew clubs and pulled shields and began marching onto the sidewalk.
No warning. No request to leave. They marched forward pushing us down, hitting us, stepping on us. We were being pushed up the grassy and muddy hill. People young and old and all in between were falling back, and subject to police attack. Other protestors were trying to grab people and pull them up the hill to avoid violence against them. As we are being pushed back and trying to help those fallen, the police on horses began shooting us with rubber bullets and gas cans. People were screaming trying to get out, but we were being herded like cattle into the assault and if we stopped moving we were hit or threatened by police, only they was not letting anyone leave. Simply moving us into being assualted. While running, you could see people bleeding from their ears, having breathing attacks and panic attacks, and if you stopped to help you would continue to be shot close range (less than 5 inches away) with pepper bullets.
Even once we got away, crossed the street, police were continuing to shoot people as they were walking away. Protestors were hiding behind buildings and cars trying to breath, the police then moved from Dodge in all directions continuing to shoot us point blank and even hitting us directly with canisters and still protestors were not fighting. Hitting throwing or hurting police. This continued to move forward for blocks. I tried to ask an officer how to get to my car at the Walgreens on 72nd, and while asking the national guard, was shot by police and told to stop speaking and walk. My friend was shot in the face, one in the shoulder and 1 in the back. The back. Unarmed protestors, non violent were attacked point blank that evening. And the police smiled. A few nicer offers gave the advice to “run from here come back later”.
Then the police chief and Mayor Jean got on the news channel and reported that the police intervened due to violence against police, safety, and hindering traffic. None of that was true. It was after that assualt and human rights violation that protestors turned to down town and began attempting to hurt the city. When you not only violate a constitutional right, assualt unarmed persons, and then lie on television and paint the peaceful protestors as villians. They will become the villians. I attached pictures of us right before the assault.
